All shook up A Review of  Richter’s Scale: Measure of an Earthquake, Measure of a Man
Susan Elizabeth Hough – 2007 Princeton University Press

The seismology in the book is handled with great assurance, though there is scarcely any attempt to provide the basic information that non-seismologists will require. But the personal aspects of the story are not so successful. Richter was a complex, neurotic loner: the product of a dysfunctional family who remembered only one meeting with his father and used his divorced mother’s surname; who possibly had an incestuous affair with his sister; and who certainly did not love his wife for long periods of their marriage. He was a keen nudist; a solitary mountain hiker; a gifted linguist who seldom left California; and, above all, an obsessive but unfocused writer, who slipped inadvertently into seismology from quantum physics while always feeling that his true vocation was poetry.

If you had college prep courses or college science you’ve been directed to use primary resources for your papers. So you know how dry scientific writing is. Those writings are supposed to be that way, leaving out emotion and drama for the sake of presenting the unadorned facts. Maybe that is one of the reasons that some us find the history of those that write those dry scientific papers interesting. After reading this review I’ll think of Richter’s personal history everytime I hear a news report about an earthquake.  That the whole concept of “magnitude” was invented by a nudist poet scientist.

Wind turbines OK’d for 2 townships

The decision gives We Energies permission to install up to 88 turbines on a 10,600-acre wind farm, according to a press release. The project would double Wisconsin wind energy capacity approved or already in operation.

Electricity generated would depend on each turbine We Energies purchases, according to a press release. The company expects each turbine to have a capacity of 1.5 to 2.3 megawatts with a total project capacity of nearly 200 megawatts, enough to power around 45,000 homes.
