Gene study supports single main migration across Bering Strait
“We have reasonably clear genetic evidence that the most likely candidate for the source of Native American populations is somewhere in east Asia,” says Noah A. Rosenberg, Ph.D., assistant professor of human genetics and assistant research professor of bioinformatics at the Center for Computational Medicine and Biology at the U-M Medical School and assistant research professor at the U-M Life Sciences Institute.
“If there were a large number of migrations, and most of the source groups didn’t have the variant, then we would not see the widespread presence of the mutation in the Americas,” he says.
Now we just need to know why during one relatively short period of time a large group of people said to themselves, hey lets cross this Strait and see what’s on the other side.
“Green investing isn’t going to solve all the world’s problems, but if you’re concerned about the environment, then it’s critical that your investment dollars reflect that,” says Eric Becker, a vice president of Trillium who co-manages Green Century. “If you’re investing in companies that continue the cycle of pollution, that’s a waste of your resources.”
[ ]…We avoid companies that have a negative impact. That includes those involved in nuclear power, are major polluters, have a poor track record of compliance with federal and state environmental laws, or are major chemical firms, mining companies and corporations that process ore like steel and aluminum. We also like clean energy like solar and wind power, fuel cells, the next generation of biofuels. It’s a way to participate in the growth of the energy marketplace, since we can’t own oil companies.
My posting about Green Century shouldn’t be considered an endorsement, just one fund to look at if you’re thinking about green investing. As much as we would all like people to do the right thing for its own sake, the reality is that much of the direction we take toward better environmental stewardship will be driven by money. Making money and taking care of ourselves and our families doesn’t have to mean that we sacrifice our ethics.
