Wet Grass and Apple wallpaper

What measures one inch in diameter and kills more people than hurricanes and tornadoes combined in the United States

- is 50,000 times hotter than the sun, and strikes this planet 3.6 million times every year?

No doubt you have the answer—lightning. But you may not know there’s less chance of dying from this underrated killer if you remember the “30 second rule”—

…This summer, more lives can be saved by following this rule: If you can count 30 seconds or less between a lightning flash and the crack of thunder, seek protection immediately.

While we hear of many people surviving lightning strikes, a good portion of those people suffer some long term physical problems that can include organ damage to hearing loss.

Nut growers look to space for support, guidance

NASA satellite images could soon give information to nut growers about their orchard’s health, allowing them to stay ahead of plant stress issues, pests and diseases that could affect crop yield and quality.

While veteran nut farmers can tell a lot just by taking a walk in the orchard, satellite imaging will be able to tell leaf temperature which is related to stress. Rather then taking a good guesstimate, growers can apply water as needed. Currently irrigation methods have been pretty refined to the point they save lots of water compared to years past, scientists think this fine tuning via fedback from space will save even more.

Incandescent Bulbs Return to the Cutting Edge

The line(Halogena Energy Save), for now sold exclusively at Home Depot and on Amazon.com, is not as efficient as compact fluorescent light bulbs, which can use 75 percent less energy than old-style bulbs. But the Energy Saver line is finding favor with consumers who dislike the light from fluorescent bulbs or are bothered by such factors as their slow start-up time and mercury content.

“We’re experiencing double-digit growth and we’re continuing to expand our assortment,” said Jorge Fernandez, the executive who decides what bulbs to stock at Home Depot. “Most of the people that buy that bulb have either bought a C.F.L. and didn’t like it, or have identified an area that C.F.L.’s don’t work in.”

The HES bulbs are sold at Amazon and Home Depot. One researcher stated there has been more research into improving incandescent light bulb in the last few years then the last twenty. One inventor is hoping to improve incandescent efficiency by 100% compared to the traditional bulb.

  • The wallpapers

Many of the wallpapers were uploaded at certain sizes and resized by the picture host so in most cases you'll have to resize them to fit your monitor. I've looked into several options, but can't find a host that is free, reliable and keeps the original size. The well known ad supported hosts will delete any photo that has not be downloaded for a while so they're out. Any money I spend on the this blog I would rather spend on the graphics then the place to host them.
