AeroCity Debuts Urban Wind Power Turbine

AeroCity LLC today introduced Hudson Valley business and government leaders to its urban rooftop “Aerotecture” wind turbine, an engineering installation to be followed by the manufacture of demonstration units in Kingston, N.Y., early next year.

The general thrust of wind trubines designed like ths is to make them so they’ll fit into a city environment to provide energy for office buildings and similar structrures.

New wind turbine site may hold key for bat deaths

Previous BWEC research suggests that bat fatalities occur primarily on low wind nights when turbines are operating at low power but in some cases the turbine blades are rotating at or near maximum speed. Scientists think that shutting down those facilities during those low-wind periods could significantly reduce bat fatalities with only a modest reduction of power production.

APS, US Solar get $4.35 million grant

Arizona Public Service Co. and US Solar Holdings LLC will work together on a project for new designs on solar thermal storage with a $4.35 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

This research is directed at using solar energy captured by parabolic mirrors to heat a fluid which in turn heats water for steam powered turbines which generate electricity. Arizona State University and the Georgia Institute of Technology are participating in the study.

Nippon Sheet: modifying plants to make solar glass

Japan’s Nippon Sheet Glass said on Thursday it has been modifying its U.S. plants to boost output of solar cell glass.

Nippon Sheet CEO Stuart Chambers told a gathering of journalists that the company sees its solar cell glass business as a growth driver and said it faces the issue of whether it could keep up with growing demand.

Keeping up with demand. Many businesses are probably wishing they had problems like that.

Study Finds Bottled Water Has Contaminants Too

Testing has shown that some brands of bottled water have just as many contaminants as some tap water does, although both sources are safe to drink, and that study by an environmental advocacy group has stirred up controversy.

The bottled water industry disagrees citing they test their water. That still leaves the environmental problem of all those plastic bottles.
