What Comes After Batteries? – A story that has been unfolding. What EEStor makes is a ultracapacitor that can store electricity between two fields. Popular Science seems to think that this ultracpacitor is probably better as a kind of battery booster then a solitary source of power in something like an electric car. EEStor’s web site is still under construction, but they have a Wikipedia entry and there is a kind of info/discussion board here. At that discussion board is a short press release about Lockheed Martin reaching an agreement to further pursue the possibilities of the battery/ultracapacitor.

Amphibians’ Ability To Predict Changes In Biodiversity Confirmed By New Study
The two scientists used maps of the environment and amphibian and bird distributions to answer the question of how the environment—as well as the distribution of birds and amphibians—changes as one moves from one place to another around the globe.
The researchers found that if the environment changes rapidly as one travels from one location to another, the amphibian and bird communities also change rapidly. However, the species of amphibians would change more quickly than species of birds. This confirms that amphibians are particularly sensitive to changes in the environment, the researchers conclude, and that this sensitivity is particularly acute given their narrow distributions.
Not being cuddly amphibians have a public relations problem. Maybe one way to sell the public on their importance is as one of nature’s built in warning devices.

That technology could become reality in two to three years, thanks to U.S. Army-backed research being done at Arizona State University’s Flexible Display Center. According to Army researchers, the displays could be in field trials with soldiers as early as 2010 or 2011.
